A winner any day

The impact of one documentary on a state’s prison system is long-lasting.

So, the Alabama Solution did not win the Oscar for best documentary last night but we’re happy anyway because already it’s caused authorities in the Yellowhammer state to — maybe not smarten up but behave a little less obviously dumb. Including the surprising last-minute commuting of a death sentence in this horrifying case. As well, the state has quietly launched an oversight program that may, if people keep the pressure on, lead to much-needed improvements.
